NOTES TO EDITORS

1. The CAC is a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) financed by ACAS but operating independently. In recent years its work was mainly confined to dealing with statutory requirements for the provision of information to recognised unions for collective bargaining (which it still does).

2. The Employment Relations Act 1999 introduced (in June 2000) a new system of statutory recognition, which the CAC operates. Each recognition case is taken by a tripartite panel, with two members drawn from both sides of industry, and a panel chairman (usually a legal or academic expert).

3. The CAC Chairman is Sir Michael Burton, who is a High Court Judge.
